Bowen House – Uptown | Dallas, Texas

I’ve been more keen on getting better acquainted with foodie influencers. So when Amanda (@cowgirlseat), invited me to have dinner at Bowen House, I knew I’d be there! I then came to find out that Carlie (@findyouryumm), Tiara (@pottymouthkitchen), and Caitie (@texas.to.table) would be joining us. I perked up even more for the opportunity. I had an Instagram meltdown right before and was running a bit behind, but walking up to the 1888-registered house grabbed my attention and thoughts. The patio was well lit and inviting with several customers smiling and enjoying the night air. Up the front porch, through the front door, and the vibe gets real cozy. I was met, at the door, with the bar, dim lights, more seating, and a warm, lit fireplace. I panicked a bit because I didn’t see the ladies, but a nice gentleman led me past the bathroom area and into The Back Room! Could a vibe get any vibe-ier?! And BOOM, there were the ladies, Fred (one of the only bartenders able to work this space), and a couple of other tables dining. I sat my things down, made quick introductions to new faces, and gave love to familiar faces.

On May 2, 1873 land is purchased and the 16 acres would be bounded by Howell Street, McKinney Avenue, Maple Avenue, and Allen Street known as Block 955 Lot #3 is the Bowen homestead lot where the landmark still stands today. The homestead (surrounded by creeks, prairie, and woods off McKinney Avenue, Bowen House, a cedar clap board vernacular prairie style home, was created) is registered by the County of Dallas in 1888, this area is known as North Dallas and located outside of the city limits by 4 miles thus would become the McKinney Avenue District by MID-1880S.

And then the Fried Brie lands on the table! Fried in-house breadcrumbs and topped with a blueberry compote, that cheese was cracka-lackin in my Marty the zebra/Chris Rock voice! IYKYK! It was quite the beauty. The perfectly toasted crostini served with it paired well. Each bite delivered a rich, creamy, and slightly sweet taste. My only drawback was that the cheese was not gooey. We all had our phones out for extra light and ready for video, but cutting into it was more like a slice and spread factor. The Chicken Salad and Butter Crackers were scoop-worthy! The mixture of English peas, carrots, eggs, and cornichon (pickled cucumber) was a spin that I didn’t know I needed.

It wasn’t until then that I ordered my drink from Fred. Fred’s job is to curate your potion based on your drink preferences. He asks a series of questions and from there, the assignment is understood! I requested it to be made with rum and of course, tons of fruit. A quick sangria! And that thang was smokin’, literally! This guy lit a cinnamon stick on fire and popped in for the final presentation! It was just as beautiful as it was delicious!

Shortly after finishing my drink the Cacio E Pepe, Tuna Tacos, Crisp Chicken Tenders, and Bowen Cheeseburger were coming out. I’ve got to rave about the pasta. Fresh tagliatelle, peppercorn, Calabrian chili and reggiano made a light and tasty bite. An easy chew, full of flavor. I’m salivating now. Don’t judge me but the fries, were top-notch! Everything else was good, but my least favorite meal on the table was the Tuna Tacos. I’ve been separating myself from raw fish. The texture aspect has been getting the best of me these days.

If you want reservations to The Back Room, call them. Seating is extremely limited! The Back Room is open Tuesday through Saturday starting at 6 pm. They also offer happy hour daily from 4-6 pm. You can even host your own cocktail class! How fun is that!?
